Italian California Ferragosto Events 2026

Ferragosto Is Almost Here! Celebrate Italian Summer Across California

By Chris M. Forte

One of Italy's happiest and most beloved holidays is almost here.

Every year on August 15, Italians celebrate Ferragosto—a national holiday devoted to family, faith, friendship, food, travel, and enjoying the final weeks of summer. Beaches fill with families, town squares come alive with festivals, churches celebrate the Feast of the Assumption, and long outdoor meals stretch well into the evening.

The tradition dates back more than 2,000 years. In 18 B.C., Emperor Augustus established the Feriae Augusti ("Festivals of Augustus") as a period of rest following the harvest season. Centuries later, the Catholic Church associated August 15 with the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, blending ancient Roman customs with one of Christianity's great feast days. Today, Ferragosto remains one of Italy's defining cultural celebrations. It is a day to slow down, gather with loved ones, and enjoy the simple pleasures of summer.

Fortunately, you don't have to travel to Italy to experience it.

Across California, Italian-American communities continue this tradition with festivals, picnics, wine tastings, concerts, and community gatherings that celebrate the best of Italian culture.

Here are just a few of the Ferragosto events we've been covering here at The Italian Californian.

Celebrate Ferragosto in the Jamul Hills: ICC's Italian Summer Sagra Returns August 15th

Celebrate Ferragosto in the Jamul Hills: ICC's Italian Summer Sagra Returns

By Chris M. Forte

Summer in Italy is a season unlike any other. Long evenings, outdoor meals, village festivals, and gatherings with family and friends all reach their peak during Ferragosto, Italy's beloved August holiday. This year, San Diegans can once again experience that tradition close to home as the Italian Cultural Center of San Diego (ICC) hosts its Second Annual Ferragosto Celebration, bringing the spirit of an authentic Italian sagra to the scenic hills of Jamul.

Rather than recreating a formal Italian dinner, this year's event embraces the warmth and simplicity of one of Italy's oldest traditions: the sagra.

What Is a Sagra?

Throughout Italy, especially during the summer months, nearly every town hosts a sagra—a community fair celebrating local food, agriculture, wine, or regional specialties. Some honor mushrooms, chestnuts, seafood, truffles, olives, or handmade pasta, while others celebrate patron saints or seasonal harvests.

A sagra is more than a meal.

It is neighbors gathering around long tables, children playing nearby, live music filling the piazza, conversations lasting for hours, and generations sharing recipes passed down through their families. Visitors are welcomed like old friends, and everyone leaves feeling part of the community.

That same welcoming spirit is at the heart of ICC's Ferragosto celebration.

An Italian Evening with a View

This year's celebration will be held at Chef Mark Pelliccia's beautiful Agriturismo, overlooking the rolling hills of Jamul. Inspired by the farm stays found throughout rural Italy, the setting provides a picturesque backdrop for an evening of food, friendship, and spectacular sunset views.

It's the perfect place to slow down, enjoy great company, and experience a little piece of Italy without leaving San Diego County.

A Menu Inspired by Italian and Italian-American Traditions

The evening's menu celebrates the evolution of Italian cuisine as immigrants adapted treasured family recipes to life in America.

Guests will enjoy:

🥖 Focaccia with Porchetta

Fresh focaccia filled with tender boneless pork roast, arugula, Parmigiano Reggiano, mustard, and a bright lemon dressing.

🍝 Pasta al Forno

A hearty baked pasta featuring tomatoes, cheese, peas, hard-boiled eggs, and mini meatballs—classic comfort food found on family tables throughout southern Italy.

🍨 Napoleon Ice Cream

An Italian-American favorite inspired by the classic flavors of traditional Spumoni, offering a sweet finish to the evening.

Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are also available with advance notice.

From Italy to Italian America

One of the evening's highlights will be a short presentation exploring the fascinating evolution of Italian cuisine after immigration to the United States.

Many dishes Americans now consider "Italian" were actually shaped by generations of Italian immigrants who adapted family recipes using ingredients available in their new homeland. The presentation will explore how authentic regional traditions evolved into the beloved Italian-American comfort foods enjoyed today.

It's a reminder that food tells the story of immigration, adaptation, and preserving culture across generations.

Bring Your Favorite Bottle

Non-alcoholic beverages will be provided, and guests are welcome to bring their own wine to complement the meal and enjoy an authentic Italian-style communal dinner.

Fun for the Whole Family

Ferragosto has always been about bringing people together, making this event ideal for families, couples, longtime ICC members, and anyone curious about Italian culture.

Whether your family came from Sicily, Tuscany, Veneto, Calabria—or you simply love Italy—everyone is welcome around the table.
