Italian California Ferragosto Events 2026

Ferragosto Is Almost Here! Celebrate Italian Summer Across California

By Chris M. Forte

One of Italy's happiest and most beloved holidays is almost here.

Every year on August 15, Italians celebrate Ferragosto—a national holiday devoted to family, faith, friendship, food, travel, and enjoying the final weeks of summer. Beaches fill with families, town squares come alive with festivals, churches celebrate the Feast of the Assumption, and long outdoor meals stretch well into the evening.

The tradition dates back more than 2,000 years. In 18 B.C., Emperor Augustus established the Feriae Augusti ("Festivals of Augustus") as a period of rest following the harvest season. Centuries later, the Catholic Church associated August 15 with the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, blending ancient Roman customs with one of Christianity's great feast days. Today, Ferragosto remains one of Italy's defining cultural celebrations. It is a day to slow down, gather with loved ones, and enjoy the simple pleasures of summer.

Fortunately, you don't have to travel to Italy to experience it.

Across California, Italian-American communities continue this tradition with festivals, picnics, wine tastings, concerts, and community gatherings that celebrate the best of Italian culture.

Here are just a few of the Ferragosto events we've been covering here at The Italian Californian.

Picnic in the Park: Celebrate Ferragosto with the Italian American Club of San Pedro

By Chris M. Forte

Looking for a fun, family-friendly way to celebrate Ferragosto this summer? Head to the beautiful harbor community of San Pedro, where the Italian American Club of San Pedro will once again host its annual Picnic in the Park—a day filled with Italian food, friendly competition, music, and community spirit.

Unlike formal galas or evening wine tastings, this celebration captures another side of Italian culture: gathering outdoors with family and friends, sharing homemade dishes, laughing over bocce matches, cheering on soccer games, and enjoying a relaxing summer afternoon together.

Whether your family has Italian roots or you simply appreciate Italian hospitality, everyone is welcome.

What is Ferragosto?

Ferragosto is one of Italy's oldest and most beloved holidays.

Originally established by Emperor Augustus in 18 B.C. as the Feriae Augusti, the holiday celebrated the end of the harvest season and offered workers a well-deserved period of rest. Over the centuries, the Catholic Church associated August 15 with the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, creating one of Italy's most important summer celebrations.

Today, Ferragosto is a national holiday across Italy. Families head to beaches, mountains, parks, lakes, and villages to enjoy picnics, festivals, concerts, and long meals together.

San Pedro's annual picnic brings that same tradition to Southern California.

What to Expect

This is a classic Italian-American family picnic.

Throughout the day visitors can enjoy:

⚽ Soccer games

🎯 Bocce tournament

🎵 Music

🏆 Friendly competitions

🎲 Family games

🍝 Delicious Italian food

❤️ A welcoming community atmosphere

Expect to see multiple generations gathering together—from grandparents sharing stories of Italy to children playing in the park while everyone enjoys good food and conversation.

The Spirit of Italian America

Organizations like the Italian American Club of San Pedro help preserve traditions that have been passed down for generations.

Events like this aren't simply about eating pasta.

They're about family.

Community.

Friendship.

Heritage.

They're reminders that Italian culture continues to thrive throughout California, from San Diego's Little Italy to Los Angeles Harbor.

Plan Your Ferragosto Getaway

One of the best things about the Italian American Club of San Pedro's annual Picnic in the Park is that it makes the perfect excuse for a Southern California weekend getaway. Spend the day celebrating Italian heritage at Peck Park, then explore San Pedro's waterfront, historic Little Italy, museums, beaches, and harbor.

Whether you're coming from San Diego, Orange County, the Inland Empire, or elsewhere in California, there's plenty to see before and after the picnic.

Wine Series: Vini della Sicilia August 21st

Discover the Wines of Sicily Without Leaving San Diego

By Chris M. Forte

If you've ever dreamed of sipping wine beneath the vineyards of Mount Etna, wandering the medieval streets of Taormina, or watching the sun set over the Mediterranean with a glass of Nero d'Avola in hand, here's your chance to experience a taste of Sicily—without leaving San Diego.

This August, Scappare Travel Club, in partnership with Davigna Wines and Trattoria da Sofia, invites wine lovers and Italophiles alike on a delicious journey through one of Italy's most fascinating regions.

Their Wine Series: Vini della Sicilia offers far more than a traditional wine tasting. Think of it as a passport to Sicily—one glass at a time.

Italy's Largest Island, One Glass at a Time

Sicily has been producing wine for nearly 3,000 years.

Thanks to its volcanic soil, Mediterranean sunshine, coastal breezes, and diverse landscape, the island has become one of Italy's premier wine-producing regions. Ancient Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, and Spaniards all left their mark on Sicilian culture, cuisine, and winemaking, creating a rich tradition unlike anywhere else in Italy.

Today, Sicily is known for both bold reds and crisp whites, including world-famous varieties such as:

  • Nero d'Avola
  • Grillo
  • Carricante
  • Frappato
  • Catarratto
  • Etna Rosso

Whether you're already a wine enthusiast or simply curious about Italian culture, this event offers an enjoyable introduction to one of Italy's most exciting wine regions.

Your Passport Includes

Guests will enjoy an evening featuring:

  • 🍷 Five hand-selected Sicilian wine tastings
  • 🇮🇹 A guided presentation on Sicily and its winemaking traditions

  • 🍇 Conversation with fellow lovers of Italy, food, and wine

The wines will be presented by Davide of Davigna Wines, who will guide guests through the unique flavors, history, and terroir that make Sicilian wines so distinctive.

More Than a Wine Tasting

What makes events like this special is that they aren't simply about drinking wine.

They're about traveling through culture.

Every bottle tells a story—of volcanic vineyards on the slopes of Mount Etna, centuries-old family wineries, seaside fishing villages, ancient Greek temples, bustling Palermo markets, and generations of Sicilian families who have cultivated grapes under the Mediterranean sun.

For a few hours, San Diego becomes a little corner of Sicily.

Celebrate Ferragosto Under the Stars in San Diego's Little Italy August 15th

Celebrate Ferragosto Under the Stars in San Diego's Little Italy

By Chris M. Forte

There are few summer traditions in Italy more beloved than Ferragosto. Every August, cities empty as families head for the beaches, mountains, lakes, and village piazzas to enjoy good food, music, friendship, and the simple pleasures of summer.

Fortunately, you don't have to book a flight to Naples or the Amalfi Coast to experience a little of that magic.

This August 15, San Diego's own Little Italy will once again embrace the spirit of Italy with Ferragosto Sotto Le Stelle—"Ferragosto Under the Stars."

An Italian Summer Evening

Held in the heart of one of America's most vibrant Little Italy neighborhoods, this celebration captures everything that makes an Italian summer unforgettable.

As the sun sets over San Diego Bay, friends gather outdoors for an evening of:

  • Live Italian music
  • Aperitivi and cocktails
  • Great food
  • Beautiful company
  • A festive atmosphere beneath the stars

The event's name couldn't be more fitting. Sotto le Stelle literally means "under the stars," evoking those warm Mediterranean evenings when conversations stretch long after sunset and no one seems to be in a hurry to go home.

Why Ferragosto Matters

Ferragosto is much more than another summer festival.

The holiday dates back over two thousand years to 18 B.C., when Emperor Augustus established the Feriae Augusti, a period of celebration and rest following the harvest season.

Later, the Catholic Church associated August 15 with the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, making Ferragosto both a national holiday and one of Italy's most important religious celebrations.

Today it has become a uniquely Italian blend of history, faith, family, vacation, and community.

Little Italy Knows How to Celebrate

San Diego's Little Italy has become one of the premier destinations for Italian culture in the United States.

Throughout the year, the neighborhood hosts festivals, art walks, outdoor concerts, religious processions, farmers markets, and celebrations that attract visitors from across Southern California.

Ferragosto fits perfectly into that tradition.

Rather than recreating Italy exactly, it captures something even more important—the Italian way of enjoying life.

Sit with friends.

Share a drink.

Listen to music.

Meet someone new.

Stay a little longer than you planned.

Music, Friends, and Aperitivi

This year's event features an evening of entertainment with performances by:

  • Sacha Boutros
  • Salvador Padilla
  • Pietro Rizzi
  • Iris Moné

Guests can enjoy aperitivi, one of Italy's favorite traditions. Similar to happy hour—but far more social—the aperitivo is about slowing down before dinner with wine or cocktails accompanied by light bites while catching up with friends.

It's less about drinking and more about conversation.

Exactly the way Italians like it.

Why You Should Go

One of the goals of The Italian Californian is encouraging readers to discover the many ways Italian culture continues to thrive right here in California.

Ferragosto Sotto Le Stelle is one of those events that reminds us Italian heritage isn't confined to museums or history books. It's alive in our neighborhoods, restaurants, music, language, and communities.

Whether you're proudly Italian, married into an Italian family, planning your first trip to Italy, or simply appreciate la dolce vita, this promises to be one of the highlights of San Diego's summer calendar.

Bring a few friends, order an aperitivo, enjoy the music, and spend an evening celebrating one of Italy's oldest and happiest traditions.

Buon Ferragosto! 🇮🇹☀️🌊

Events: La Costa dei Fiori Lodge #2424 Spaghetti Fundraiser Friday, September 25th

A North County Italian American Spaghetti Fundraiser in Carlsbad

La Costa dei Fiori Lodge #2424 — Friday, September 25, 2026

For visitors looking for a relaxed Italian American community evening in North County San Diego, the La Costa dei Fiori Lodge #2424 Spaghetti Fundraiser offers a simple, welcoming local event built around food, fellowship, and heritage. Hosted by La Costa dei Fiori, the North County San Diego lodge of the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, the dinner features spaghetti with meatballs, salad, and bread for $20, with the option to eat in or carry out.

The event takes place Friday, September 25, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at La Costa Valley Club, 2280 Calle Barcelona, Carlsbad, CA 92009. The lodge’s official website describes La Costa dei Fiori Lodge #2424 as a North County organization that brings together Italian Americans, spouses, friends, and supporters to celebrate Italian culture and community.

About the Host Organization

La Costa dei Fiori Lodge #2424 is part of the larger Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, a national Italian American organization founded in 1905. OSDIA describes its mission as preserving Italian heritage, encouraging cultural connection, supporting charitable causes, and strengthening Italian American identity across generations.

The California Grand Lodge history identifies La Costa Dei Fiori Lodge No. 2424 as having been founded in Encinitas on October 22, 1978, making it a long-standing part of the Italian American community in North County San Diego.

Why Go

This is the kind of event that reflects the heart of Italian American community life: a plate of pasta, a local lodge, a family-friendly atmosphere, and a fundraiser that helps keep cultural organizations active. It is not a large street festival or tourist spectacle. It is a neighborhood-style dinner where visitors can experience Italian American fellowship in a more personal setting.

It also makes a good excuse to build a North County evening or weekend around Carlsbad, La Costa, Encinitas, the beach, shopping, and nearby family attractions.

Suggested Itinerary

Afternoon Arrival

Arrive in Carlsbad or La Costa by midafternoon. If you are coming from San Diego, Orange County, or Inland North County, give yourself extra time for Friday traffic. Check into your hotel, stop for coffee, or take a short walk around the area before dinner.

4:00 PM – 6:00 PM: Dinner at the Fundraiser

The dinner begins at 4:00 PM, making it convenient for families, retirees, locals, and visitors who prefer an early meal. Arriving earlier may be helpful if you want to eat in, avoid the busiest pickup window, or spend more time meeting lodge members.

After Dinner: Easy North County Evening

After dinner, consider a short drive to Carlsbad Village for coffee, dessert, shopping, or a sunset walk near the coast. Carlsbad Village is one of the area’s most walkable districts, with dining, beach access, and free public parking lots in the Village area, though posted time limits may apply.

Where to Stay

For the closest upscale stay, Omni La Costa Resort & Spa is the natural choice. The resort is located at 2100 Costa Del Mar Road, Carlsbad, close to the La Costa area, and offers golf, spa amenities, restaurants, pools, and a full resort experience. Omni lists the property as having 36 holes of golf, eight pools, and a full-service spa.

For a broader range of lodging, Visit Carlsbad maintains a hotel directory that includes beach hotels, luxury resorts, vacation rentals, and budget-friendly options.

Good lodging areas include:

La Costa / Aviara: Best for staying closest to the fundraiser, resort amenities, golf, spa experiences, and a quieter North County setting.

Carlsbad Village: Best for visitors who want restaurants, beach walks, shops, coffee, nightlife, and a more walkable coastal experience.

Near LEGOLAND / The Flower Fields area: Best for families turning the fundraiser into a weekend trip with children.

Carlsbad beach hotels: Best for visitors who want ocean views and a more vacation-like stay.

Where to Eat

Since the fundraiser itself is centered on spaghetti, meatballs, salad, and bread, you may not need a full restaurant meal the same evening. Still, Carlsbad has plenty of options if you want to make a full day of it.

Near La Costa, Omni La Costa Resort & Spa lists several on-site dining options, including Bob’s Steak & Chop House, Bar Traza, VUE, Marketplace, Spa Café, and other resort dining choices.

For shopping-center dining, The Shoppes at Carlsbad lists a variety of restaurants and eateries, while Visit Carlsbad notes full-service options there such as The Cheesecake Factory, Yard House, Texas de Brazil, and Beshock Ramen & Sake Bar.

For a more local coastal feel, head into Carlsbad Village, where the Village dining directory includes options ranging from casual meals to fine dining.

Other Attractions Nearby

Carlsbad Beaches

Carlsbad is known for its coastal setting and beach access. Visit Carlsbad describes the city as having seven miles of Pacific coastline, with beaches suited for walking, surfing, fishing, birdwatching, and relaxing.

The City of Carlsbad notes that many of the beaches are managed by California State Parks, with lifeguards, restrooms, picnic areas, and parking lots provided through the state park system.

Carlsbad Village

Carlsbad Village is a good add-on before or after the dinner. It offers restaurants, cafés, shops, coastal access, and a more traditional beach-town atmosphere.

LEGOLAND California Resort

Families can turn the fundraiser into a weekend trip by adding LEGOLAND California. Visit Carlsbad lists LEGOLAND California Resort and SEA LIFE Aquarium among the city’s major attractions.

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch

The Flower Fields are seasonal, so they will not be in peak spring bloom during late September, but the surrounding area remains a major Carlsbad visitor district with shopping, restaurants, and family attractions. Visit Carlsbad lists The Flower Fields among the city’s well-known attractions.

Omni La Costa Resort & Spa

Even for visitors not staying overnight, the La Costa area is strongly associated with resort culture, golf, spa experiences, and relaxed North County leisure. Omni notes that the resort is near attractions including The Flower Fields, LEGOLAND, Balboa Park, and the San Diego Zoo.

Transportation, Getting There, Getting Around, and Parking

The fundraiser location is in Carlsbad’s La Costa area, which is easiest to reach by car. Visitors coming from San Diego can take I-5 north or I-15 north to Highway 78 / local roads, depending on their starting point. From Orange County or Los Angeles, the most direct route is usually I-5 south.

For visitors planning to spend time in Carlsbad Village, the Village is accessible by car from Interstate 5 via Carlsbad Village Drive or from the coast along Carlsbad Boulevard. Carlsbad Village Association notes that on-street parking and public lots in the Village are free, though three-hour limits are enforced where posted.

For the fundraiser itself, check the lodge or venue for event-specific parking instructions. Since the event is at a community club location rather than a large festival site, arriving early is wise, especially during the dinner rush.

Weather and What to Pack

Late September is usually one of the more comfortable times of year in coastal North County. Visit Carlsbad lists September averages around 73°F for the high and 61°F for the low, with light average rainfall.

Pack:

A light jacket or sweater for the evening
Comfortable shoes
Casual dinner clothes
Sunglasses if arriving earlier in the day
Cash and card, in case payment options vary
A cooler bag if carrying out multiple dinners

Practical Tips

Confirm the event directly with the lodge before traveling, especially if you are coming from outside North County.

Arrive early if you want to eat in, socialize, or avoid the busiest pickup period.

Bring small bills, even if digital payment is available, since community fundraisers sometimes use multiple payment methods.

Make a full evening of it by pairing the dinner with Carlsbad Village, a beach walk, or dessert nearby.

For families, the 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM time window is convenient because it allows for an early dinner and an easy drive home.

Final Thought

The La Costa dei Fiori spaghetti fundraiser is more than a pasta dinner. It is a small but meaningful expression of Italian American community life in North County San Diego. Events like this keep local lodges visible, bring people together around the table, and preserve the warm, informal traditions that have always been central to Italian American culture: food, family, friendship, service, and a good plate of spaghetti.

Where to Eat

North Beach is the heart of the weekend. The parade organizers specifically list several restaurants along the route that may offer street-side seating during the parade, including Original Joe’s, Piazza Pellegrini, Tony’s Pizza Napoletana, Italian Homemade Company, Palermo II Delicatessen, Firenze by Night, North Beach Restaurant, Mona Lisa Mare e Monti, and Steps of Rome Trattoria.

For parade day, reserve early and ask directly about parade-view seating. For a casual plan, grab focaccia, pizza, espresso, or gelato and walk toward Washington Square. For a sit-down dinner, North Beach is the obvious choice, but Union Square also works well if you are attending the Grand Ball.

Suggested Itinerary

July 28: Giants Italian Heritage Night

Arrive in the afternoon, check into a SoMa, Embarcadero, or Union Square hotel, then head to Oracle Park early. The Muni N Judah and special game-day shuttles stop at 2nd and King near the ballpark, while the T Third/Central Subway stops at 4th and King, about a block away.

After the game, walk the Embarcadero if the weather is clear, or head back toward Union Square or North Beach for a late meal.

October 3–4: North Beach Kickoff and Madonna del Lume

Spend Saturday afternoon in North Beach, then go to Washington Square for Light Up the Tricolore. The event includes a flag-raising, live music, and tricolor lighting tied to Italian Heritage Month.

On Sunday, build your day around the Madonna del Lume traditions. Since some details and prices are event-specific, check the official page and contact the organizers before making firm plans.

October 10–11: Grand Ball and Parade Weekend

On Saturday, explore North Beach, Chinatown, and Fisherman’s Wharf during the day, then dress for the Grand Ball at the Westin St. Francis that evening.

On Sunday, attend the 10:00 a.m. High Mass at Saints Peter and Paul Church, then find a parade spot along Columbus Avenue or near Washington Square. The parade begins at 12:30 p.m. and viewing is available along the full route.

Other Attractions Nearby

Washington Square and Saints Peter and Paul Church are central to the weekend and make an easy meeting point.

Coit Tower is a short uphill walk from North Beach and gives you one of the best city views.

Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 are close to the parade starting area. They are touristy, but convenient for families and first-time visitors.

Chinatown sits just south of North Beach and pairs well with a morning or late-afternoon walk.

Lombard Street is nearby, though expect crowds on parade weekend. SF Travel highlights Fisherman’s Wharf, North Beach, Coit Tower, Lombard Street, and other nearby neighborhoods as major visitor areas.

Transportation, Getting Around, and Parking

Use public transit when you can. Parking in North Beach and around Oracle Park can be tight, especially during event periods.

For Oracle Park, Muni is the easiest option. The Giants note that Muni connects to BART at Embarcadero and Powell stations, with N Judah and game-day shuttles stopping at 2nd and King and the T Third/Central Subway stopping at 4th and King.

For North Beach, walking is often best once you arrive. The North Beach Garage at 735 Vallejo Street is open 24 hours, with posted hourly rates and possible special-event pricing.

For the parade, arrive early and avoid driving directly into the route area. Streets around Fisherman’s Wharf, Columbus Avenue, and Washington Square can be slow or closed during parade setup.

Weather and What to Pack

October is usually one of San Francisco’s better months, but layers are still essential. Average October highs fall from about 72°F at the start of the month to 67°F by the end, while lows fall from about 58°F to 55°F. Rain chances are generally lower early in the month but increase as October goes on.

Pack a light jacket, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, and something warmer for evening events near the water. For the Grand Ball, bring formal attire. For parade day, bring layers you can remove if the afternoon warms up.

Practical Tips

Book hotels and restaurants early, especially for October 10 and 11. Confirm event details before traveling, since some 2026 pages still say more information is coming. For the parade, pick a viewing area based on your style: Fisherman’s Wharf for the start, Columbus Avenue for classic North Beach energy, or Washington Square for the finish near Saints Peter and Paul Church.
